Diabetes mellitus refers to the condition of impaired insulin secretion and abnormally high blood sugar. There are two types of DM: type 1 DM, which usually affects people under 30 and type 2 DM, which affects others.

All the symptoms of DM – increased urinary frequency, high volumes of pale urine, increased thirst levels – may progress to orthostatic hypotension and dehydration. Hyperglycemia (abnormally high blood sugar) can also cause weight loss, nausea and vomiting, and blurred vision. Seek medical advice if you have any of the above.

While no treatment prevents the onset or progression of type 1 DM, type 2 DM can be prevented by lifestyle modification.
